What makes Scottish blueberries so special?

On July 8, 2026

Blueberry season is finally here – and if you’ve ever wondered why Scottish blueberries taste so good, you’re in the right place.

Sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour, blueberries are one of summer’s simplest pleasures. They’re also packed with goodness, making them a favourite for everyone from health-conscious snackers to busy families looking for something tasty and nutritious.

But what makes Scottish blueberries stand out from the crowd? And what makes Castleton blueberries extra special?

Let’s dive in.

Why are blueberries considered a superfood?

For such a small fruit, blueberries punch well above their weight.

They’re packed with antioxidants, fibre, vitamin C and potassium, which is why they’ve earned their reputation as one of the world’s favourite superfoods.

Many people include blueberries in their diet because they may help support heart health, contribute to overall wellbeing and provide a natural source of nutrition without loads of sugar.

Of course, the best thing about blueberries might simply be the fact that they taste amazing.

Why do Scottish blueberries taste so good?

Scottish blueberries ready to harvestThe secret is Scotland itself.

Our long summer days and cooler temperatures give blueberries more time to ripen naturally. Instead of rushing to maturity, the berries slowly develop their flavour and natural sweetness.

The result? Beautifully sweet, juicy blueberries that are packed with flavour.

It’s one of the reasons Scottish soft fruit is so highly regarded and why many people wait for the local season to arrive.

What makes Castleton blueberries different?

We’ve been growing fruit on our family farm in Aberdeenshire since 1992 and were among the pioneers of blueberry growing in Scotland when we planted one of the country’s first blueberry crops back in 2005.

Today, we grow 11 varieties of blueberries across 168 acres, carefully selecting varieties that deliver exceptional quality throughout the season.

Being further north than many soft fruit growers gives us an advantage too. The combination of Scotland’s cooler climate and long daylight hours allows our berries to ripen slowly, helping them develop even more sweetness and flavour.

In short, we let nature do what it does best.

Why should I choose local blueberries?

Because they’re better for more than just your taste buds.

When you buy local Scottish blueberries, you’re supporting local farmers, local jobs and local communities. You’re helping Scottish businesses thrive and keeping food production closer to home.

There are environmental benefits too. Imported blueberries often travel thousands of miles before reaching the shops. Choosing locally grown fruit helps cut down on food miles and reduces the carbon footprint of your shopping basket.

Fresh, local and delicious – that’s hard to beat.

Are Castleton blueberries grown sustainably?

They are. At Castleton Farm, we’ve been practising regenerative farming since 2018, focusing on improving soil health and protecting the land for future generations.

From cover crops and careful water management to reducing soil disturbance, we’re always looking for ways to grow great-tasting fruit while caring for the environment that helps produce it.

Honestly? Straight from the punnet.

But if you’re looking for inspiration, here are five delicious ways to enjoy them:

  1. Blend them into a smoothie

They pair surprisingly well with leafy greens, feta and toasted nuts.

When is Scottish blueberry season?

At Castleton Farm, our blueberry harvest runs from mid-July through to the end of October.

That’s when our berries are at their freshest, sweetest and most flavourful.

So if you’re looking for a healthy snack, a versatile ingredient or simply a taste of Scottish summer, now’s the perfect time to enjoy them.

Choose Scottish. Choose local. Choose Castleton blueberries. Your taste buds will thank you for it.
